The Hyde Park Neighborhood Street Safety Study is a comprehensive initiative aimed at addressing the pressing issue of street safety in the Hyde Park neighborhood. Recognizing the paramount importance of safer streets to residents, the study focuses on identifying areas where infrastructure is deteriorating or lacking, proposing recommendations for improvement, and facilitating the acquisition of necessary funding.

Conducted by Street Smarts Design + Build, the study entails a thorough examination of existing conditions, soliciting resident input at various stages, and formulating an actionable plan for implementing safety measures. With the overarching goal of enhancing the quality of life for Hyde Park residents, the study highlights the direct correlation between street safety and various aspects of urban life, including pollution reduction, injury prevention, and crime mitigation.

Hyde Park, renowned for its historical significance and central location within Kansas City, boasts a vibrant community comprising families, children, and an aging population. As the neighborhood continues to evolve, the demand for safer streets has become increasingly pronounced. By improving street safety, residents stand to gain better access to amenities such as parks, schools, and local attractions, fostering a deeper sense of connection and appreciation for their neighborhood.

A dedicated website was established to facilitate resident engagement and input. This interactive platform featured an innovative map interface where residents could pinpoint specific areas of concern and provide feedback on street safety issues. Furthermore, an input form allowed residents to articulate their priorities and suggestions for improving street safety within the Hyde Park neighborhood. This collaborative approach ensured that the voices and perspectives of residents are integral to the formulation of strategies and recommendations aimed at enhancing the safety and livability of neighborhood streets.

Following the completion of the study, the website has transitioned to presenting the findings and recommendations derived from the comprehensive analysis conducted by Street Smarts Design + Build.

Residents and visitors in general can now explore the results of the study, gaining insights into existing conditions, identified areas for improvement, and proposed strategies to enhance street safety within the Hyde Park neighborhood. The platform continues to serve as a vital tool for community engagement, fostering transparency and collaboration as residents work together to prioritize and implement measures that will positively impact their quality of life.

By locating these hubs between crosswalks and on-street parking, we have been able to add these hubs to the street without replacing any parking spaces.  So far the network consists of 8 hubs but is expected to grow rapidly over the next few years.

Martin City Business District

Working with the Martin City Community improvement District, we helped engage stakeholders to determine the best locations for the 38 parking spaces. 

Downtown Lee’s Summit

Working with Downtown Lee’s Summit Main St. Inc, we installed 30 parking spaces to meet the growing demand for bicycle parking in downtown Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

Downtown Overland Park

Working with Overland Park Public Works, Downtown Overland Park Partnership, and BikeWalkKC, we installed 74 parking spaces to help meet the needs for micromobility parking in downtown Overland Park. These creative custom bike racks also serve as a visual art piece for the district.
