Open Streets

In the Spring of 2020, when the world was first faced with the global pandemic, governments and public health officials recognized the increasing importance of outdoor play and leisure.

Realizing local neighborhood streets could function as these spaces, the city of Kansas City, MO enacted the first DIY Open Streets program allowing neighborhoods to apply for permitting in order to close their street to through traffic in order to provide more safe space for outdoor activities.

Since the onus was placed on the neighborhoods, Spin, Better Block and Street Smarts partnered to implement the first few Open Streets in Kansas City, MO
